Introduction of School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in Luoyang Normal University

The predecessor of School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering was the Department of Chemistry, which was established in 1978. In order to promote the synchronous development of basic research and applied research, two majors of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering & Technology were set up in 2002 and 2005, respectively. In consideration of the development of economy and technology, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering was founded in 2008. To meet the demand of domestic economy and western regional economy development, particularly those related to chemical industry of energy sources, the school will introduce international cooperation and new management mode following the construction concept of “high-levelhigh-standard and local”. The school aimed at exploring the innovative way of talent nurturing and reaching top level in the aspects of both academic research and engineering applications of new technique.

The school consists of the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Applied Chemistry, the Department of Chemical Engineering & Technology and the basic chemical experimental center. The school offers 3 bachelor’s degree programs (Chemistry, Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering & Technology). At present, the school has about 1359 undergraduate students. Among them, 50% of undergraduate students have the opportunity to pursue further studies. As a result, the graduates of our school are very welcome in the industry, mainly in the areas of coal chemical industry, petrochemical industry, energy resources, environmental protection, pharmaceutical industry for the job in education, scientific research, technological development, engineering design and operational maintenance, project supervision and senior administration.

The school has its strong faculty and staff team with 12 professors and 30 associate professors, among them, including 1 “New Century Talent recognized by the Ministry of Education” professor, and over 50% possess PhD degree and the experience of studying abroad. In the past fifiteen years, the school always emphasize education that advocate the principal of connecting theoretical and practical education. To intensely improve the quality of teaching level and talent cultivation, the school discusses and reforms educational mechanism in-depth, continuously updates teaching content, strengthens the laboratory construction and implements researching mode in education. Currently, the school has obtained 1 Excellent Course in Henan Province. In the recent five years, our students won many awards in various scientific and technological competitions, including the silver award of College Student “Challenge Cup” Competition in Henan Province.

The school focuses on fundamental and prospective construction of laboratory condition in long-term, which offer strong support for scientific research and talent cultivation. At present, the school has many large scale research experimental devices, including X-ray diffractometer, single-crystal X-ray diffractometer, NMR spectroscopy, high performance liquid chromatography, electrochemical tester, micro-chemical reaction equipment, mechanics performance testing device and physical performance testing device and so on. In addition, the school also has thermal analysis instrument, gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and laser particle size analyzer and other advanced testing instrument. In terms of software, the school has Aspen PLUS, Chemical CAD, UniSim Design, Fluent, COMSOL and other large commercial software.

After fifteen years of development, the School has gradually formed some superior and characteristic research directions that are listed as follows: inorganic synthesis and preparative chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic nanomaterials, supramolecular chemistry, organometallic chemistry, asymmetric synthesis and catalysis chiral ligands, bioanalytical chemistry and metabolic chemistry, molecular modeling and computational chemistry, electrochemical engineering and energy storage battery technology, catalytic reaction engineering and new energy chemical industry, fine chemicals, green chemical technology, and environmental protection and comprehensive utilization. The school has managed enormous high-level research project, including the projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the projects of Henan program. The total research funding has reached 30 million RMB. Moreover, the faculties in this school has published about 90 SCI papers yearly, such as Inorganic Chemistry, Crystal Growth and Design, Chemical Commun., Composite Science and Technology. At present, there are 38 patents authorized by State Intellectual Property Bureau of China.
